You could be right and he may still be hurt from his previous relationship but that was two years ago and your'e not his stand-in. Have you actually told him you are interested in getting to know him better? If he is interested in you as you say he is, you are likely to get a good reaction. You could always suggest a date (by date, I mean an opportunity to spend some time together - without the child if possible, if not, a date where the child is occupied for most of the time and you can talk as adults) it doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic date - I'm sure you could always ask his advice on something that needs fixing around your home? As well as detracting from any possible date-like focus, you'll be giving him a chance to show off his male prowess and help him get over any pride issues you think he might have. just an idea!
