Hi there, no-one can say dating via a dating site is 100% safe but then dating the standard way could be just as risky! I don't know of any statistics regarding crimes committed through people using sites but some common sense will see you through safely I think! You are right not to give out personal details until you have been on a few dates and can verify that your internet date is who he says he is. You should apply the usual safety rules also: Meet in a public place, preferably not a pub as alcohol numbs your mind and if you get drunk you'll be less in control!, Tell your friends/family where you are going and when and to expect a call from you at a certain point during the date to show all is going well. Of course, you hear stories of internet dates who end up asking their date for money - never give them anything and walk away if someone gives you a line about an emergency or something - pleading poverty is the best option and if you're date is really interested in you and not your purse, you'll see each other again :-) Overall, Internet dating is as safe as you want it to be - you could always use internet dating sites that require a credit card to join, that way you know if there are any problems, you can contact the people who run the service as they have the contact details of their paying members and maybe avoid the free services to be extra sure that you are meeting people who are serious about dating and not just 'chancers' looking for a quick fumble in the bushes ;-) have fun and be safe! x
