How do I end this affair?


I have had an affair with a guy for about 6 years and it's clear he's not going to leave his partner for me so I want out. The problem is that everytime I tell him it's over between us, he persuades me that it won't be long until we can be together permanently. Of course, I'm not stupid and I know its highly unlikely he will leave his partner as he's been saying this already for years. So now I've had enough and I'd like to hear advice from anyone who had the courage to leave an affair and how you managed to break free?
