Can a high school Junior and a college freshman make it in a long distance relationship?

I know that the chances are very slim. But there is this boy that I care about a great deal, and he cares about me also. We try not to use the "L" word because he is in college and there is no garuntee that we will even still talk in a month from now. He calls me every night, is very honest with me. He says he doesn't want to date anyone else, but he is interested in the girls there(physically). It is very awkward for us talking about other people in our lives because we do care about each other, but we are open to change if it happens. The way we see it is if we both are meant to be together than we will. No pressure. I'm worried I wont be able to grow and mature with him at the same rate, given that we're in two different places in our lives. We try to incorporate each other into our lives as much as possible though. Is there any hope? I'm not an optimistic person, I'm very realistic, and I still want to have a little hope. But I don't want the sugar-coated ,"Well maybe" answer, I want someone to let me know that even though it isn't likely it MIGHT happen, but the chances, and how I can increase those chances...please help me.
Thank you very much

It seems as though you guys just started being romantically involved - am I right?

Honestly, I can tell you from knowing lots of people who have gone though this that chances are, it probably won't work out (I hate saying this!). Unless you guys were dating for a while before he went to college, then he probably isn't going to want anything serious with you. He just got to college, and - let me tell you - there are very, very few male college freshmen that are looking for a serious relationship. Especially if he's telling you that he's physically attracted to a lot of girls at his school. I myself am a sophomore in college now, and I experienced the whole freshman boy thing first-hand.

If he really likes you enough to sacrifice his college-freshman-exploring-lots-of-options thing though, he will make it work, I can almost guarantee that. I know people for whom situations similar to yours have worked out! So all hope is not lost, but I wouldn't get your hopes way up just to have them crushed (trust me, I know how that feels).

But again, if he keeps talking to you and making you believe he really likes you, but doesn't do anything about it like making it official or something, then chances are it's not going to work out. If he does something like this then he's probably just keeping you on the side for when he comes home or something.

I don't think all men are scumbags, as my attitude in this post may infer. I just think that your situation in particular seems a bit unlikely.

Especially since you're in high school, you should try getting to know more guys that are on the same level as you! Good luck, and I hope you don't hate me for being such a downer on this one :/

I'm more than happy to chime in that me and my girlfriend just started getting involved two weeks before my winter break was over. We're making it work, and I'm going home every two weeks to see her and take her out, as it works out that I am only 3 hours away at my current school. She is a junior and I am a freshman by the way. I'm sort of teased by people in my residence hall that I should forget about her, and "go for college chicks" but they just don't understand what we mean to each other.. If you really like each other and you're both willing to make it work, then go for it. I hope this helps
