Dating my ex's roommate?


So here's my situation. It's a little complicated but I'd really appreciate your feedback:
When my ex and I dated, he was very in love with me and I wasn't. We have broken up, but have stayed close friends (it also might be important to know that we will somewhat be in each other's lives for the rest of our lives due to complicated family situations). We live on opposite sides of the country, but I will be moving to his region in a year. Recently on a trip out to see him, I met his roommate (who doesn't know that we used to date), and we have been talking ever since. His roommate and I click extremely well, and have both developed crushes on each other. I really like him and want to pursue this... How should I deal with this situation? My ex told me that he will inevitably be extremely depressed and hate the next guy I date no matter who it is, so I'm thinking it really doesn't matter WHO I date, since he will hate him and be depressed about it anyway. But I know my thoughts are biased, since I really wants things to work out with his roommate.
Would it be an extra low blow to my ex to make things more serious with his roommate? I really want to keep my friendship with my ex, but I also want to date this person that I click so well with. Please let me know your thoughts, I am so conflicted.

Anonymous 		Intersting dilema..If you don't get what you want (the roommate) you'll be unhappy. If you do, your ex will be unhappy. Sounds like you feel guilty about not feeling the same way as your ex did about you. Ah, I'd date the roommate - your ex is going to be unhappy anyway and why should he be able to affect you still? He needs to grow up and you need to have some fun :-) just my two dimes worth of course ;-) good luck!
